A Plan With a Future

Yesterday Amanda was faced with a decision regarding how the battle with cancer might continue from this point. As is her nature, she chose a plan with a future. Following are some of the details of that plan.

We will be here in Houston until the later part of this next week. We should be home by Friday, Sept. 12. Amanda will be in the hospital over the weekend (is already there now) taking an additional and stronger round of chemo (she will lose her hair again) in an effort to do as much damage as possible to the cancer before surgery.

In one month, on Tuesday, October 7, Amanda will have the surgery. We will be coming back down to Houston the previous week for pre-surgery scans and other necessary appointments.

The actual surgery will involve many surgical specialists in the operating room at one time, as it is a very major surgery in the left pelvic area, involving the hip and sciatic nerve as well as some area at the base of the spine.

To be sure all the cancer is removed from that area, Amanda will lose all of her left leg.

She will be in the hospital for about 4 weeks, possibly less.

At some time Amanda will get a prosthetic leg that is attached with some kind of a belt system around the waist .... I think we have a meeting with those people tomorrow, and so will learn more about all that.

VERY IMPORTANT: Amanda wants her classmates and friends to know that she is OK with this, and that with the prosthesis she will be able to do whatever she wants. She wants her classmates and friends to know that she doesn't see this as limiting her, but giving her an opportunity for a full and active future. She told us there are things she wants to do, and that she can do them without a leg, but she can't do them with cancer. In fact, Amanda has already been invited to go on a ski trip in January of 2010 and skydiving, by her doctors here at M.D. Anderson. (They are planning for her future too. :-) Plus, as most of you know, Amanda wants to take some trips to the mission field as well ... although, as her father, I think she is already ministering to hundreds of people here.

Additionally, if all continues to go according to the present plan, Amanda will also have two lung surgeries in this next summer.

And then .... hopefully ... an uneventful Senior year at CFS high school.

In closing, if anyone can beat all this and win this battle, it is Amanda. She is the eternal optimist. She loves life. She is full of joy. (That's why she is known and frequently referred to as "Amanda Joy.") And she cherishes her schoolmates, friends and family. She is always on their side. In my life I've learned that there are many who will turn against you and abandon you ... but I've also learned that Amanda never will. She just won't do it. She believes in the grace and mercy of God, and that God really does love her, and loves all of you as well. It is an amazing thing for me to watch. It seems to me that she views every day as a good one. In fact, I have a wonderful and funny story from when she and Caleb were toddlers, and every morning, regardless of the weather outside, Amanda would run to me with a big smile saying, "Daddy, it's a pretty day."

The dad.

I have been keeping up with your blog for several months. Even though you don't know me, please know that I check every day and pray for your family. You are my hero Amanda and I don't even know you. As a teacher, I pray that my students are inspired one day by someone the way that you have inspired me. As a sit here with tears in my eyes, it is not out of sadness because it is out of joy that you are a fighter and have the will that so many don't. God Bless You each and every day! I am rooting for you and hope to meet you one day.

I absolutely adore your daughter! She truly knows the meaning of life. Tell her there are so many of us who started as strangers to the family but through this long battle have embraced each and everyone of you in our hearts. Your victories are our victories. Your challenges are our challenges. But very few, if any, of us could have faced the challenges with such courage and strength as Amanda. She is beautiful.

We love you,

Amanda teaches all of us to revel in the blessings that we have: family, friends, and a wonderful Savior, instead of things we don't have, even when the things we don't have would seem as essential as good health. Hearing the seriousness of the upcoming surgery was difficult for all of us here at CFS, because we love Amanda so much and any pain and loss for her is pain and loss for us. But we recognize that we are very privileged that God would allow us to walk through this time with the McDaniel family. We love you all and will continue to pray for healing miracles for Amanda, as well as for strength, joy, more tender family moments, provision, and God's nearness and grace. We look forward to seeing you back in Columbia.

hey amanda!
my name's mackenzie mayer. Ga-Yeoun Kim is the girl my family's hosting this year and i think you know her.
I just wanted to say that you inspire so many people that you don't even know. We can all see how God is working through this and I want to commend you on your attitude through all this.
So many people would be tempted to blame God and be a jerk about the whole thing, but you chose to stand above all that and that's why we have shirts that say stand with amanda. People ask me about that shirt every time i wear it. They ask who you are and why you have your own shirt. My reply is always the same.
I say "she is a girl at my school who has cancer and she's still standing strong."
Left leg or not.

Amanda,
I was asked by Linda Reeves (my Aunt) to keep you and your family in my prayers.
I have heard and read your story and you have touched me. You are a very strong christain and I only strive to be as strong as you. Cancer has hit our family recently and it is very hard to understand what the actual person with it is going through, but with God on our side all things are possible! I pray that all goes well with your chemo and surgery. You are in my prayers always. God Bless you and your family!

Love in Christ,

Even though I've been following Amanda in her battle with cancer for quite awhile now----she never ceases to amaze me with her faith, her courage, her love and her joy for life. This latest news just knocked me for a loop and I'm just reading about it, I'm not the one going through it or having to deal with it even. I am most touched over Amanda's concern for her friends and classmates reaction, wanting to assure them and comfort them. I am in awe.

I am going to remain in awe over this child for quite some time, she has taught me on levels too deep to express with words....

May God bless, support, and keep you, all of you, in His perfect peace.....

Loving prayers continue from Iowa.......

Dear Amanda and family. I had you on my mind and in my prayers all night after I read the latest entry. I am sending you a prayer that has helped me in the past, it goes like this:

Jesus, Light of the World
When I am afraid and unsure,
comfort me with the light of
Your presence....

When loneliness chills me,
warm me with the light of
Your love....

When the road ahead seems dark,
guide me with light of
Your way....

When I don't understand and my thoughts are unclear,
fill me with the light of
Your wisdom....

When I seem spent like a candle consumed,
replenish me with the light of
Your life....

Then, so filled with Your light,
use me,
So that I , with You,
may be light for the world....

Amanda, you and your family, by sharing your story so eloquently, have become that light for all of us.

May God bless you and hold you in His perfect peace,

On your team here in Iowa....

Hey Amanda! I am so, so, soooooo, proud of you for making that tough choice to keep on fighting. You are such an inspiration. I remember when I first started going to CFS we had a pray at the pole one morning. When you took a turn and prayed i was astounded by your faith and love for God. As you prayed i looked up at you and thought "I love that girl's cut! (I had no idea that you had had cancer and that is why there was such a short length) It is soo hassle free and the headband with the little bow clip is soooo cute!" I know it is not a very godly thought considering we were praying but it is true! We miss you and cant wait to see you back!
Love ya, Bethany Eubanks

Hi Amanda,

It is so amazing that we serve a God that is bigger than all of lifes' circumstances and it is more amazing that through every situation, He has our best interest at heart.

Thanks for standing strong and for being an inspiration to many. To individuals like myself who have never met you but love you so dearly.

Many blessings girl, He is on the throne!

Hello. You don't know me, but I'm praying for your family. Octobers have been hard on you guys. I can't even imagine. I know that, for me anyway, it's a battle to stay optimistic when the hardest of times come, and a lot goes on behind the scenes before a blog post goes up that none of us will ever fully appreciate. So just know that we check up on your blog and pray.

From California,
Alexis and Laelia

(I also got your website from Amy. :))

PS: Amanda is a great role model for my little girl! Maybe someday they'll meet and compare "legs." :)
