Friday evening - the last bag was hung

What a week. The last day of this chemo is now almost upon us and thankfully - oh, so thankfully, Amanda has done so much better this time. Although there have been times of nausea, this time they have been very manageable and have passed by fairly quickly.

At 2:00 this afternoon the final bag was hung. It felt very significant to us...we can now see the light at the end of this long tunnel and it seems to be shining brightly. The infusion will be complete at 2:00 tomorrow (Saturday) and then it will be replaced with a large bag of Mesna ( a follow-up drug that is used to protect her organs from this harsh chemo). Presuming there are no unforeseen complications, Amanda will be released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon, her last scheduled chemo stay completed and behind her. Just typing those words feels unbelievable to me....I know that I haven't yet really processed exactly what that means...

And on a different subject - yes, that was Amanda's smiling face on the evening news. A group of students from Columbia College collected money and purchased three Wii gaming systems, many games and all the accessories for the pediatric wards of University Hospital. Yesterday when they delivered them, the kids were invited down to play for a bit. Amanda and others were in a great game of bowling when the t.v. cameras and photographers arrived. We did not realize that they would put it on the evening news just hours later and so we did not get to see the telecast.

It was a wonderful gift to the hospital and will be such a great way for the kids staying there to help pass the long hours. Our thanks to all the students and people of our community who helped to make that gift possible.

A last chemo almost complete, a child feeling good and managing her treatment well, a sister (Abby) snuggled up and tucked in with her and sharing a Friday night movie together, the incredible community support and the prayers that sustain our family and others - so many things for me to be thankful for.

And I am, I truly am.
